Balayage is a freehand hair-painting technique where a colorist sweeps lightener directly onto the surface of selected strands instead of saturating them in foils. The French word means "to sweep" — and that's exactly the motion: painted highlights placed where natural sun would lift the hair.

Because pigment is feathered onto the mid-lengths and ends rather than packed against the scalp, balayage grows out without the harsh regrowth line you get from traditional foil highlights. The result is softer contrast, brighter ends, and a much longer window between salon visits.
